Nicky Whitt Gets $1k McDonald's Grant

Nicky Whitt Awarded $1k from McDonald's Tri-State Community Grants

The McDonald’s Tri-State Community Grants are awarded annually and many of our area teachers apply hoping to receive a grant, which can be up to $1,000.

One of our own Boyd County Public Schools teachers, Ms. Nikki Whitt, who teaches at Catlettsburg Elementary, was chosen as one of the grant recipients for the 2017-2018 school year.

The McDonald’s Tri-State Community Grants, sponsored by our local McDonald’s franchise owners, are awarded for community improvement projects in four categories:  Youth/Recreation, Beautification, Senior Support, and Support for the Arts.

“I applied for the grant using the theme One Book, One Town, Ms. Whitt said. “I got the idea from a similar theme called One Book, One School in which every student, teacher, and staff member in a school reads the some book, or has the book read to them. This promotes discussion, excitement for reading, and a feeling of unity everywhere throughout the school.”

The book chosen for this year’s One Book, One Town project is The Indian in the Cupboard by Lynne Reid Banks.

To get the whole town involved, Ms. Whitt chose to expand the project to the Catlettsburg community.

“The local McDonald’s employees in Catlettsburg are getting on board and will read the book on the same schedule as the students,” said Whitt. “The Catlettsburg McDonald’s has also agreed to set up a reading area in the restaurant to promote the community reading project. McDonald’s will also send Ronald McDonald to our school for our kickoff for this project.”

Whitt hopes to go bigger with the project by reaching out to other community members such as police officers and public officials to join the One Book, One Town project.

Thanks to the McDonald’s grant, the entire community of Catlettsburg, Kentucky will be united by reading.
