2018 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards-The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards were created in 1995 to recognize students in middle level and high school grades who have made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service. These awards are presented annually on the local, state and national level. It is open to all volunteers in grades 5 - 12, so interested students can go to www.spirit.prudential.com to complete an application online. The deadline is November 7, 2017 so start the process today!
HOBY-The Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminars were founded in 1958 as a means to inspire and develop current sophomores to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. This year's HOBY will be held in June 2018 at Transyvania University in Lexington, KY. The application process is a 500-word essay to a writing prompt. The essays should be returned to the counseling office no later than November 27, 2017. A first and second place essay will be chosen by a committee and the winning authors will be registered for HOBY. All applicants will be notified by December 8, 2017.
2018 Rogers Scholars-The Center for Rural Development is currently accepting online applications from high school sophomores in Southern and Eastern Kentucky for next summer's Rogers Scholars program. The Rogers Scholars program provides valuable leadership skills and exclusive college scholarship opportunities for these students so that they can become the region's next generation of community leaders. The 2018 program will be held June 24-29, 2018 and July 8-13, 2018. All lodging, meals, and program expenses (with the exception of transportation to and from the program site) are provided at no cost to the participants. National Youth Science Camp-NYSCamp is an honors program for two high achieving high school graduates from each state in teh United States and others from around the world. The camp is a broad science, technology, engineering, and mathematices (STEM) experience that incorporates both creative and performing arts as well as an outdoor adventure series including opportunities for rock climbing, mountain biking, spelunking, whitewater kayaking, and overnight backpacking. The delegation also travels to Washington, D.C. and will tour museums on the National Mall, attend a Science Policy panel discussion at the American Association for the Advancement of Science(AAAS), and are hosted at a luncheon in their honor with members of the U.S. Senate.
